Maps, maps, and more maps! February 23, 2023 (2-6pm)

When I came in today, I had an hour before starting the last 3-hour reading room shift of the day. I listened to a 30-minute "Wise Up" Wednesday video replay from Molly, our collections manager, about Archives Space, which we're shifting to in the coming month. It looks like it will be a tremendous improvement and I am looking forward to learning how to navigate it from a reference librarian's perspective. Then, I went through my emails before heading over to the desk!
While at the reference desk, I helped a patron use our Maps guide to isolate which maps of early Austin he wanted us to pull for him. Another patron came in looking for an old black and white map of Austin that shows MOPAC that she could use as an overlay for a painting she has worked on, but she didn't find one that was suitable. And then a reference email came in about an old map of Travis County Roads that he wants digitized. Although the map is available for free download on the Portal to Texas History, he wanted a higher resolution image. I emailed him the reproduction form and directed him to email Molly with the request and payment. A few other patrons came in to use the City Directories and peruse through our high school yearbooks. As always, I tidied up the reading room, closed out the cash drawer and re-shelved what I could before closing up.
